Pre-translate settings

In the Pre-translate and Statistics dialog, you can configure and start pre-translation.

How to begin

On the Preparation ribbon tab, choose Pre-Translate. Alternatively, in the online project management interface, select the Pre-translate command. The Pre-translate and Statistics dialog has four tabs that you can use to customize pre-translation and run Statistics.

You can also pre-translate for all target languages in a project. Select the All languages option in the target language drop-down list in the Translations pane.

Caution: You might not be able to X-translate document in an online project while memoQ server is running an automated task on the same project. In this case, you will receive a message with the advice to wait a few minutes. This is not an error: you can continue with X-translation in a few minutes.

Overwrite behavior

If some target segments already have text, pre-translation overwrites them in some cases, and leaves them as they are in other cases:

•Empty (Not started) segments are always filled in if there is a match.

•Previously pre-translated segments are overwritten if memoQ has a better match than the one that was used earlier.

•Edited or confirmed segments are not overwritten. If you need to overwrite these segments, you need to clear them first using the Clear translations button on the Preparation ribbon tab. Then set their status to Empty/Not started and run the pre-translation.

Scope and lookup tab

Scope section:

•Project: Select this radio button to pre-translate all segments in the project.

•Selected documents: Select this radio button to pre-translate all segments only in the documents you selected in the Translations pane of the Project manager.

•Open documents: Select this radio button to pre-translate all segments only in the documents that are currently open.

•Active document: Select this radio button to pre-translate all segments only in the active document.

•From cursor: Select this radio button to pre-translate all segments only in the active document downwards from the cursor. This option is only available if you start the Pre-translate dialog with a translation document open and active in memoQ.

•Selection: Select this radio button to pre-translate only the selected segments of the active document. This option is only available if you start the Pre-translate dialog with a translation document open and active in memoQ.

•Work on views: Check this check box to pre-translate all segments only in the views of the project. This option is only available if you select the Project radio button and you have views in the project. When unchecked, the scope is all the segments of the original documents of the project, excluding the segments of views.
 

Lookup section:

•Exact match with context: Select this radio button to pre-translate only those segments for which a 101% or 100% match is found.

Note: 101% matches: If you selected the Use context check box in the New translation memory dialog, the translation memory will store the previous segment and the next segment with the segment you confirm. Whenever memoQ finds a segment that is a 100% match, and both the previous segment and the next segment are 100% matches, the actual segment will be indicated as a 101% match.

Note: You cannot limit pre-translation to only pre-translate double  context matches. You can only lock or set to proofread segments with a double context match.

•Exact match: Select this radio button to pre-translate only those segments for which a 100% match is found.

•Good match: Select this radio button to pre-translate only those segments for which a match above the "good match threshold" (defined by the TM settings resource, on the TM settings category of the Settings pane in the Project home - 95% by default) is found.

•Any match: Select this radio button to pre-translate all segments with matches above the minimum match threshold (60% by default). Only available if TM-driven segmentation is disabled.

•Only unambiguous matches: Check this check box to pre-translate only those segments for which only one 101% match or 100% match is found, and to leave everything else unchanged. This option is only available if you select the radio button labeled Exact match with context or Exact match in the Lookup section.

•Perform fragment assembling: Check this check box to have the translation of a long source segment put together from translations of its smaller parts (i.e. its fragments) during pre-translation. Click the Settings... link to customize the settings for fragment assembly. Segments assembled from fragments will be marked with pink in the status column of the translation grid. Only available if TM-driven segmentation is disabled.

Note: If you are not satisfied with the result of the pre-translation, you can always repeat it (after including an additional translation memory, for example) or delete selected (or all) translations using the Clear translations command.

TM-driven segmentation section:

•automatically join and split segments for best match: Check this check box to enable translation memory-driven segmentation. automatically joined and split segments will be marked with in the status column of the translation grid. If there is no exact match for the segment, memoQ will examine whether the segment joined to the next one results in a suitable hit (Exact match or Good match as selected in the Lookup section). If the automatic joining of segments does not result in any suitable hit but there is an exact match for the first part of the segment, memoQ will split the segment after this exact match, and will continue to examine the second part of the split segment for automatic joining and splitting.

Note: If checked, Perform fragment assembling will be unchecked and the Any match radio button will be disabled.

•Settings: Opens the TM-driven segmentation settings dialog where you can configure properties of TM-driven segmentation.

Note: If you invoked the dialog from the online project management interface, the Scope options are limited to Selected documents and All documents, and TM-driven segmentation is not available. In the enterprise version you can also apply Machine translation for segments that do not yield a translation memory match.

Confirm/lock tab

This tab allows you to automatically confirm or lock segments that are pre-translated. Only confirmed or proofread segments display progress information and all segments need to be confirmed or proofread to reach 100% completion. Lock the rows if you don't want translators to change the content.

Rows to confirm/lock based on match rate section:

•Do not confirm or lock segments: This option does not make any changes to segments pre-translated: they will appear as pre-translated.

•Exact match with double context: Use this option to change the status of or lock 102% matches.

•Exact match with context: Use this option to change the status of or lock 101% matches.

•Exact match: Use this option to change the status of or lock 101% or 100% matches.

•Only if match is unambiguous: Use this option to prevent changing the status of or lock 101% or 100% matches where the translation memory contains more than one equally good match and the translator needs to decide which one fits the context better.

Status change section:

•New status: pre-translated: Use this option to leave the status of pre-translated segments pre-translated.

•New status: Translator confirmed: Use this option to change the status of pre-translated segments to confirmed.

•New status: Reviewer 1 confirmed: Use this option to change the status of pre-translated segments to Reviewer 1 confirmed.

•New status: Reviewer 2 confirmed: Use this option to change the status of pre-translated segments to proofread.

•Make rows locked: Use this option to lock pre-translated segments.

Versioning tab

This tab allows you to save document snapshots before and after pre-translation to the document history if you have versioning enabled.

•Create minor version snapshot before pre-translation: Use this option to create a new minor version which reflects the document status before pre-translation. Add a Note for information if you want.

•Create minor version snapshot after pre-translation: Use this option to create a new minor version which reflects the document status after pre-translation. Add a Note for information if you want.

Statistics tab

This tab allows you to combine pre-translation and statistics in one go. Check the Perform statistics check box to perform both steps in one go. You find the report in Project home > Overview. The analysis includes the project TM and corpora.

If you have a multilingual project and perform statistics for all target languages, then you get a statistics report for the whole project, for all target languages.

Word counts section:

•memoQ: Check this check box to display memoQ word counts.

Note: In memoQ, similarly to Microsoft® Excel®, every string or character that is between whitespaces is counted as a word. Therefore in memoQ mode you always count numbers as a single word and hyphenated words like in-bound are also considered to be a single word.

•TRADOS 2007-like: Check this check box to display Trados 2007-like word counts. Legacy SDL Trados® Translator's Workbench versions handle word counts differently.

Note: In old Trados versions (before SDL Trados Studio), numbers are only counted as words when they are within a segment, and a number of other rules apply. In Trados®, segmentation is a factor in word count, i.e. you can get a different word count if the same text appears in one or two lines. Trados® segmentation rules are not public, therefore there is usually a small discrepancy between the word counts of Trados® and Trados-mode memoQ. In most of the cases, this discrepancy does not exceed 1.5%. We suggest that you only use Trados 2007-like word counts if your client explicitly requires you to do so.

Tags in word and character counts section:

Inserting and checking formatting tags takes time, and you may want to take this into account in pricing.

•Tag weight (words and/or characters): Enter a weight that should be added to the word/character count based on the tag statistics. Tags are counted anyway, but if you enter a number here, the word or character count will be increased by that number for each and every tag. Enter 0 for excluding tags from the word count.

Navigation

Click OK to start pre-translation. Pre-translated segments will be marked with blue in the status column of the translation grid (unless you changed the status on the Confirm/lock tab). Clicking Cancel will close the dialog without making changes to the document.
